Female Foeticide in India

I am familiar this desi couple who had four daughters; I suppose they desired a son and were unsure about providing for them. When the wife got pregnant again and it was determined (through amniocentesis?) that the fifth child was female, I am told that they traveled to a different city to get the fetus aborted. The sad part is as time passed, the financial status of this family became better and they could have easily provided for this fifth child.

सूरज की रूह है बेटियाँ
चांदनी का चेहरा है बेटियाँ
जुगनू है , तितलिया है , कलेजा है बेटियाँ
फुरसत मिले तो इनको पड़कर भी देखलो
कुरान है , बाइबल है , गीता है बेटियाँ

I recall Katie Couric echoing the sentiments of the last two lines of this Hindi poem, when she was on NBC's Today Show.
