Amma Sri Karunamayi

I saw an advertizement about Amma Sri Karunamayi's visit to Cleveland, Ohio in June, 2009. The advertizement had the caption-Spiritual Talk and Blessings from the Divine Mother.

What the heck, Divine Mother? Only God is Divine, no human being, irrespective of their lofty status, deserves the description of Divine. Further only God, assuming that there is one, can bless, no human being can bless.

And only your biological or the woman who has brought you up deserves the title of Mother. Calling any woman Amma or Mother is cheesy; it belittles the status of the real mothers.

  1. Good blog, was browsing through.

Just wanted to comment that although in English we would not like to call just anyone as mother, in Indian languages it is quite common to attach "amma" or "akka" or "devi" to people's names - it doesnt mean anything literally except for some courtesy.

But, I agree this Divine Mother business is just amazing what people can claim and get away with.
